Beanies Inspired By Their Favorite Band

Beanies Inspired By Their Favorite Band

The Request

Everyone has a favorite band.  That musical group that you will see once, twice, three times, and then again (and likely again).  You cannot believe they are right there in the flesh performing and you ARE THERE!  You are clapping and singing along and having the BEST time!  The album drops?  You've already got it pre-ordered AND added the swag for good measure.

That's my sister and my nieces and The Killers.  YES, they have seen them live multiple times. YES, they have artwork displayed in their homes to further show their respect and admiration for this group of artists.

I was asked to create a beanie for each of them as homage to their favorite Killers albums.  Yikes!  This is a high bar.   I know and understand completely their love for this band.  I have similar feelings for my own favorite performers.  BUT--what if I fall short.  What if I somehow disrespect the work of Brandon Flowers and his bandmates.  NO!  I could not think that way.  I WILL meet this request!

The Albums

I immediately recognize the distinct personality and mood of each.  The covers also consist of different color palettes.  The common thread is the Killers K.  I was told that the K is always displayed on the stage at their live shows and was essential to the completed product.

With the images in hand, I went yarn shopping.  I was able to assemble the desired colors through my on-hand yarn, some local shopping, and some online perusing.

The Killers K

I decided to create a patch resembling the Killers K.  This involved machine and hand sewing, as well as beading, an art form I had not undertaken before.  Thankfully, I have a book with a variety of embroidery stitches that also includes a section on beading.

Upon completion of each beanie, I used embroidery floss to hand sew the patch to the beanie's front.

Why I Enjoyed This Project So Much

  • An opportunity to learn a new skill!
  • High level of creativity to develop a design that represents something someone has a special connection to.
  • Applying numerous techniques:  beading, applique, crochet, embroidery
  • Creating unique pieces of art that may also be worn

Why My Sister and Nieces Enjoy the Beanies So Much

"I love my hat, and love that it's custom and so unique!  It's soft, and feels good on.  I like the weight of it too, perfect for cool weather."

"I love having such a unique accessory and it's the perfect style/weight for me."
